AI may aid aortic calcification detection on chest X-rays; leaves open effects on outcomes.
<ns3:p>Aortic calcification represents a key marker of cardiovascular disease, detectable through medical imaging. This research investigates the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to assist radiologists in identifying aortic calcification in DICOM chest X-ray images, which were extracted from CT scans, leveraging HL7 FHIR standards for data interoperability. Deep learning algorithms, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), were employed to enhance qualitative calcification analysis. The dataset comprises DICOM files with manual and Large Language Model (LLM)-assisted annotations from clinical reports. The proposed model demonstrates high precision and recall. The workflow implements HL7 FHIR R4 resources (Patient, ImagingStudy, Device, and DiagnosticReport) for standardized health data exchange, enabling interoperability with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and compliance with the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF) as mandated for EU cross-border health data exchange. These findings indicate that AI integration can shorten diagnostic time and ensure consistent detection accuracy, thereby supporting improved patient care. Future work will focus on model optimization and the exploration of FHIR-based reporting integrations.</ns3:p>
