Textual analysis uncovers the evolving significance of William Morris in ecosocialism from 1980 to 2025.
With the growing movement of ecosocialism and the overall consciousness that capitalism is incompatible with sustainability, William Morris (1834-1896) has become increasingly prominent as a historical figure in terms of his socialist activism. Within Marxist circles, Morris’s reputation throughout the 20th-century to today, from being neglected to be celebrated, poses an interesting question of the mechanisms of rediscovering past activists and the need for a historical figure in social movements. In this study, I will be investigating how the treatment of William Morris has changed over time in the context of ecosocialism starting in the 1980s to 2025. To answer this question, I used textual analysis of both William Morris’s works and academic texts from 1980 to 2025 that feature William Morris and ecosocialism. For sampling, I used Google Scholar advanced search with specific criteria, resulting in 115 unique texts with 6 additional ones. Three major findings emerge from such analysis: (1) Morris’s politics have become more relevant over time as ecosocialism grows, (2) there has been a shift in interest in Morris’s romanticism and aesthetic commitments to his Marxism and political activities, and (3) the literature has often engaged selectively with Morris, but later scholars have started to approach Morris more holistically.
