Narrative review highlights IOL technologies, outcomes, and decision-making for personalized patient care.
Introduction: Over the past 75 years, intraocular lens (IOL) technology has evolved through innovations in materials, optics, and surgical techniques. There is a comprehensive range of IOL products available at times making the decision challenging for the surgeon and patient to choose the most suitable IOL. Areas covered: The objective of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the enVista (monofocal, Aspire enhanced monofocal, and Envy full range vision), Lux (LuxGood monofocal, LuxSmart extended depth of focus, and LuxLife full range vision), and IC-8/ Apthera (small aperture) IOL platforms focusing on advanced/novel technologies and clinical performance to guide surgical decision-making and personalized lens selection. PubMed was searched from inception through October 2025, and studies were selected based on relevance and contribution to the objectives.Expert opinion: No single lens type meets the needs of every patient, and the lens choice should be based on patients’ anatomical and physiological characteristics, needs, expectations, and lifestyle. Considerations for selecting an IOL and advice for setting patient expectations are provided.
