Altruism and prosocial behavior are foundational to moral development. Yet, the extent to which these tendencies are innate or acquired through experience remains a central debate across psychology, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology. Existing research for innate explanations argues that prosocial behaviors are seen across different species, linked to specific variants, associated with neural activity in areas like the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, and present in infants before childcare learning environments significantly influence them. On the other hand, socialization research in support of a learned origin displays how parenting styles, cultural values, socioeconomic status, and school environments all shape the extent of our prosocial behaviors. Despite this extensive literature, framing altruism as either nature- or nurture-driven overlooks its multifacetedness. This review synthesizes evidence across disciplines and argues that the nature-versus-nurture framework alone is insufficient to explain prosocial behavior. Instead, it proposes a context-dependent, mechanism-specific model in which altruism is understood as a set of distinct but interacting processes, including kin-based, reciprocity-based, empathy-driven, and norm-based behaviors. By reframing altruism as a collection of contextually activated mechanisms rather than a single underlying trait, this framework offers a new theoretical approach for interpreting seemingly conflicting findings across disciplines and generates falsifiable predictions for future research. To facilitate empirical evaluation, the review also outlines a testable experimental framework capable of distinguishing among these mechanisms and assessing their selective activation across contexts.
