This article contends that music in Nicola Barker’s H(A)PPY is invariably utilised as a conduit of historical consciousness and as a device mirroring and supplementing the eccentric textual symbiosis of form and content in the novel. By contradicting the intellectual and material framing of the two main instruments signifying two distinct paths for the protagonist Mira A., the kora and the guitar, one facilitating balance and one inducing turmoil, the musical dialectic unfolds the novel’s central conflict while articulating the shadow story of Paraguay, a major narrative kernel. The musical structures underlying the novel’s explorations position the kora’s synthetic revamp as an ahistorical carrier of dystopian harmony and cultural erasure against the guitar’s proximity to a painful, albeit polyphonic, past before the existence of the Young, providing the key to H(A)PPY ’s experimental framework via the engagement with trauma enclosed in historically grounded counter-narratives.
