Exploration of two previously unknown E.T.A. Hoffmann manuscripts, revealing their history and significance.
The Winkler Collection in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University owns two hitherto unknown E.T.A. Hoffmann autographs. The Yale Fragments are two different manuscripts from the Fantasiestücke in Callot’s Manier (Fantasy Pieces in the Manner of Callot); one is presumably a working manuscript, the other a setting copy, and both were dispersed by Hoffmann’s publisher Carl Friedrich Kunz. The introduction discusses the provenance and relevance of the Yale Fragments; facsimiles, transcripts, and translations then follow.
