Qualitative analysis uncovers how accounting program administrators navigate ethical dilemmas in fund raising, suggesting the need for improved guidelines.
Ethical decision-making has become an increasingly important topic to academic and business leaders. One area in which ethical issues abound is fund raising. Many university accounting departments have a long-established tradition of external fund-raising efforts intended to augment university support budgets. As internal university funds become more limited, external fund-raising activities are likely to become even more critical to the success of accounting departments. This research is designed to describe the judgments of accounting program administrators when confronted with ethically ambiguous fund-raising situations and to examine the influence of environmental and organizational factors on those decisions.
