Like most North American Indian groups, the Eastern Pueblos of north-central New Mexico historically experienced a reduction in overall population size. Analysis of the available historic population estimates shows dramatic swings in the magnitude and direction of demographic trends. Evaluation of the sources and accuracy of these data suggests that the observed demographic pattern is confounded by enumeration inconsistencies, social disruptions, and a long-established pattern of population shifts in response to inherent environmental instability.
