Evaluates antioxidant and antidiabetic effects of Ficus carica extracts, suggesting dietary benefits.
Objectives:The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare the antioxidant and antidiabeticactivities of Ficuscarica fruits and leaves as well to determine its phenolic profile. Methods:The antioxidant activity was analysed by in vitro lipid peroxidation assay, DPPH radical scavengingactivity, ABTS assay, antioxidant potential assay, metal chelation and antidiabetic assayperformed usingstarch-iodine method. Results:The extract showed remarkable scavenging activities (44.62.1% and 77.01.6% in DPPH andABTS assay, respectively), iron chelation (88.30.29%), reduction potential (83.110.30%) and antidiabeticactivities (47.000.06% α-amylase inhibition). Administration of comparatively higher doses of extract alsoreduced lipid peroxidation (72.000.15% inhibition). HPLC analysis revealed the presence of quercetin, caffeic aid and gallic acid in F. carica fruit extract. Whereas, leaves of the plant showed the presence ofpyrogallol and gallic acid. Conclusions:Thus, oxidative stress and diabetes could be prevented or at least delayed by dietary intake ofFicuscarica.
