The research identifies mental health issues faced by transgender individuals due to administrative delays in updating documents, highlighting the need for improved procedures.
The aim of this research was to understand how transgender people experience mental health problems while trying to change their legal identification document after they have changed their name in Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu. Specifically, it looked at what types of administrative delays, repeated applications for documents, the clear procedures and discrimination occur as transgender individuals try to update their documentation, and the impact of these types of delays and discrimination on their mental health in the form of increased stress, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. Data for this study was collected from 150 transgender people, using a structured questionnaire. Participants reported low levels of family support and experienced multiple hurdles when trying to update their documentation, causing them additional emotional distress.
