A recently proposed ceramics production technique, Fused Deposition of Ceramics (FDC), utilizes the Fused Deposition Modeling™ method; with the introduction of ceramic particle filled thermoplastic filaments. This novel method will enable the manufacturers to produce net-shape structural ceramics parts, with little or no post-processing. Numerical simulation of FDC poses numerous provocative challenges. Three models have been developed to investigate the cooling process of deposited filaments and the quantification of vector-length bonding errors between deposited filaments. Finite difference and finite volume techniques are utilized in numerical models to address heat transfer issues regarding the melting and solidification of the thermoplastic binder. MDSC data of RU160 binder-particle system has been incorporated into the numerical models. Rectangular geometry has been used to demonstrate the capabilities of the two dimensional model.
