Two-dimensional (2D) layered halide perovskites emerged as one of the most interesting semiconducting systems with a unique combination of quantum well structure, excellent optical and semiconducting properties. The structural flexibility allows us to engineer multifunctional properties in these perovskites such as piezo-, pyro-, and ferro-electricity. The convergence of pyro- and ferroelectric properties, along with the photoexcitation and semiconducting properties make them ideal candidates for the investigation of emergent phenomena of pyro-phototronic or ferro-pyro-phototronic effects to design next-generation self-powered optoelectronic devices. This review is focused on providing an overview of design strategies in 2D layered halide perovskites which gives rise to non-centrosymmetric crystal structures. Furthermore, we have discussed the current synthesis strategies and their multi-modal applications in photodetection, and optical communication has also been discussed. Finally, a comprehensive summary has been provided on the design and applications of emerging 2D-layered halide perovskite materials in pyro-phototronic effect, while the current challenges and future outlooks are also discussed.
