This study extends the concept of trauma as an individual encounter by introducing the notion of collective trauma to explore and understand the experiences of Palestinian journalists reporting the continuing war in Gaza. Drawing on Pain's (Citation2021) concept of collective trauma, this study analyzes the collective trauma experienced by Palestinian journalists and their communities in the context of political-based violence. The study fills a gap in the current literature by highlighting the scarcity of research on the subjective experiences of journalists from the Global South who cover wars and conflicts in their own communities. Thematic analysis of journalists’ personal anecdotes and statements—collected from news media organization websites and Instagram profiles—indicates three key themes: Collective trauma, underpinned by two sub-themes: “Physical Isolation” and “Social”. The other two themes are: “Coping, Resilience, and Sense-Making in Trauma Reporting Narratives” and “Emotional Labor and Detachment.” Examining these experiences through the lens of collective trauma, this study portrays Palestinian journalists as resilient individuals actively striving to make sense of traumatic events, while highlighting the emotional labor invested in their reporting.
