Abstract Corrosion of steel is a major concern in various industries due to its economic and safety implications. Corrosion inhibitors have been widely used to protect steel from corrosion in corrosive environments. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of advancements in corrosion inhibitors for steel in corrosive solutions. The paper begins with an introduction to corrosion and the need for corrosion inhibitors. The types of corrosion inhibitors for steel are discussed along with their mechanisms of corrosion inhibition. Evaluation methods for corrosion inhibitors are also reviewed. Applications of corrosion inhibitors in various corrosive environments, including acidic and alkaline solutions, are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the review highlights the synergistic effects of corrosion inhibitors with other additives. The paper also explores future prospects and challenges in the development of corrosion inhibitors. In conclusion, this review paper summarizes the key findings and emphasizes the importance of corrosion inhibitors in protecting steel from corrosion.
