Platform economy has injected new vitality into the economic system and has had an unprecedented impact on the labour market. This paper examines how platform economy development affects employment skill structure in China, using provincial panel data from 2013 to 2022. A two-way fixed effects model and a mediation effect model are employed for empirical analysis. The results show that the development of platform economy has significantly promoted the upgrading of employment skills structure, with a regression coefficient of 0.227. The industrial agglomeration effect plays a mediating role in this process. The regression coefficient of platform economy development on the secondary industry agglomeration is -0.5956, and the regression coefficient on the tertiary industry agglomeration is -0.3526, both of which are statistically significant. The effect of platform economy on employment skill structure also varies across regions. These findings provide theoretical and practical insights into the labor market impacts of the platform economy.
