Review of phase transformations and melting behavior of compressed forsterite, highlighting implications for material science.
The behaviors of shock compressed forsterite have been reviewed through Hugoniot measurements and sample-recovery experimental results as well as recent in situ x-ray diffraction measurements. The phase transformation kinetics and high metastability of forsterite will be addressed to understand the complications in such behaviors at high pressures that are affected by shear, strain rate, defect and dislocation formations during the whole shock process and the observation methods of recovered samples. The melting behavior of forsterite under shock compression is associated with the solid phase transitions, including the metastable phases and dislocation formation, and pressure-dependent congruent and incongruent meltings in the system MgO-SiO2.
