Abstract It is no longer in doubt that access to and the use of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has greatly improved in many African countries. In Nigeria specifically, this is evident in the increasing number of students that have and make use of mobile phones, do ‘all night browsing’ of the Internet and have ready access to mobile phones. While this is empowering for students, there are however growing negative trends that emanate from the access and use of these information and communication technologies. The paper uses qualitative methods of personal observation and focus group discussions held with students, to explore the dialectics of access to and use of information and communication technologies and students’ academic and social behaviours.
