This article reports benefits of working remotely in dental healthcare in the Falkland Islands, implying a rewarding experience.
The Falkland Islands is a United Kingdom Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. The challenging geography of the Islands presents a barrier to accessing the centralized healthcare services in Stanley, the capital. The remote location has influenced recruitment and retention of the dental workforce previously, and can affect service availability. The dental department has three fully equipped, modern dental surgeries, and a small dental laboratory. Working in a UKOT is challenging and demands a broader scope of practice and willingness to venture out of a comfort zone. These authors have unreservedly positive experiences of working in the Falkland Islands, and we would encourage any clinician at any stage in their career to consider the experience. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This article outlines the experiences and benefits to working in a remote healthcare setting.
