Abstract: The mental health crisis among medical students is a global concern, marked by high rates of stress, burnout, depression, and suicide. The backdrop to which these challenges exist in India is one of systemic pressure, related social stigmas, and academic rigor. The report prepared by the National Medical Commission’s Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being of Medical Students in 2024 offers a landmark framework with the aim of promoting mental well-being and preventing suicides in this at-risk population. The nature of this review is such that it will focus on the scientific bases, major findings, and recommendations of the Task Force, with the latter being discussed in a global and national context, keeping in view the imminent need for structural reforms, early intervention approaches, and a cultural shift favoring empathy and wellness within medical education.
