Investigates wave-current effects on scour around monopile foundations, highlighting sediment redistribution.
This paper investigates how wave-current interactions influence scour around offshore wind monopile foundations using a three-phase Eulerian CFD model. The study applies sedInterFoam to simulate air, water, and sediment phases, capturing free-surface effects, sediment mobility, and horseshoe-vortex dynamics. By comparing current-only, co-directional wave-current, and opposing wave-current cases, the paper shows that waves can redistribute sediment, producing a shallower but wider scour hole. The work provides useful insight into phase-dependent scour mechanisms around monopiles.
