Exploratory framework distinguishes between reward and discovery continuity in human engagement, suggesting implications for motivation and design.
This paper proposes a tentative distinction between Reward Continuity and Discovery Continuity as two different modes of sustained human engagement. While many contemporary systems appear to operate through recurring cycles of reward, acquisition, and renewed insufficiency, long-term participation in research, craftsmanship, artistic practice, and exploration may be sustained through a different mechanism. The paper introduces Discovery Continuity as a mode of continuation organized around uncertainty, meaningful incompleteness, and ongoing discovery. It further proposes the concept of Continuity Mismatch, which may emerge when the dominant mode of continuation within an individual differs from the dominant mode embedded within their environment. The framework is exploratory and intended as a contribution to future discussions on motivation, participation, organizational design, human development, and AI-era social systems.
