Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) are an important component of India’s cooperative banking system and play a significant role in promoting financial inclusion in urban and semi-urban areas. These institutions provide banking services and credit support to small traders, micro-entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, and middle-income groups. The present study examines the role of Urban Co-operative Banks in economic development and their potential contribution toward India’s development vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The study is based on secondary data obtained from reports of the Reserve Bank of India, NABARD publications, Government of India documents, and relevant research literature. The analysis indicates that although the number of UCBs has declined due to consolidation and regulatory reforms, their deposits and advances have continued to grow steadily. Strengthening governance, technological adoption, and regulatory support can enhance the role of UCBs in promoting financial inclusion and local economic development.
