Shows increased enzyme activity in guinea pig peritoneal macrophages, suggesting environmental influences on immunity.
Summary Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity of guinea pig peritoneal exudate cells (PEC's) was increased by the intraperitoneal administration of benz[a]anthracene (BA) in oil. Increased AHH activity was also found in normal PEC's treated with BA in cell culture. Adherence of macrophages to culture dishes permitted the separation of PEC's into 2 populations. Higher specific activity of AHH was associated with the adherent macrophage-rich monolayer than with the nonadherent population.
