Evaluation confirms historical occupation by finding artifacts in an archaeological assessment area, indicating settlement patterns.
The evaluation strategy set out by Prospect Archaeology, implemented by PCAS Archaeology Ltd and agreed with the Historic Environment Senior Project Officer for South Kesteven comprised the machine excavation of 25 evaluation trenches, some targeting specific geophysical anomalies but others forming a sample of apparently 'blank' areas (Fig. 2). The evaluation work at Barrowby was undertaken between Monday 9th September and Wednesday 2nd October 2024. The evaluation confirmed the presence of ditched boundaries and enclosures suggested by the geophysical survey results, with some evidence for possible structural features too. Inhabitation of the Site is also indicated by finds of animal bone, shell, iron slag and pottery, the latter of Middle Iron Age or more general Iron Age date. There seems to have been a focus of occupation within the large eastern enclosure. Worked flint may indicate low levels of earlier prehistoric activity on Site, with medieval and post-medieval pottery from low-intensity later agricultural use.
