This paper develops a structural and phenomenological account of Pre-Datum Recursive Continuity within the PATON System Cognitive Branch. Conventional descriptions of cognition frequently begin with observable products such as conscious thought, language, memory retrieval, symbolic reasoning, decision-making, and reportable awareness. The present framework asks what may already be occurring before cognition stabilises into one of these explicit forms. The originating observations include: sensing a structural relationship before being able to explain it; recognising that a title or classification is wrong before identifying why; knowing the direction in which an argument is moving before the next sentence becomes available; experiencing familiarity before explicit recall; and detecting fit, mismatch, incompleteness, or progression prior to verbalisation. These experiences suggest that explicit cognition may be preceded by a relationally organised precursor state carrying: directional tendency; salience; compatibility; familiarity; affective weighting; structural adjacency; and emerging coherence. The paper defines Pre-Datum Recursive Continuity as the inherited relational orientation through which cognition becomes directionally organised before that organisation stabilises as an explicit, reportable, or symbolically compressed cognitive datum. A cognitive datum is treated as a sufficiently stabilised point of explicit registration. The term pre-datum therefore does not mean cognition without history, information, embodiment, sensation, or prior experience. It refers specifically to structure existing before stable conscious identification as a distinct datum. The paper introduces felt topology as the experienced relational shape of a cognitive field before its full symbolic contents become available. Felt topology may include: nearness; separation; fit; mismatch; direction; incompleteness; tension; and anticipated convergence. The framework further distinguishes: orientation from explicit content; pre-verbal from non-verbal structure; structural familiarity from explicit recall; emergence from projection; inherited orientation from fixed instinct; and admissibility shaping from truth. Pre-datum orientation is not treated as infallible. It may inherit accumulated expertise and genuine structural compatibility, but it may also inherit fear, bias, habit, emotional salience, incomplete context, or outdated relational weighting. Explicit cognition therefore remains necessary for: testing; correction; communication; comparison; formal reasoning; and archival persistence. The central proposition is: Pre-datum recursive continuity is the inherited relational orientation through which cognition becomes directionally organised before that organisation stabilises as an explicit, reportable, or symbolically compressed cognitive datum. The deeper conclusion is: Observable cognition may be the first explicit registration of continuity without being the first stage of continuity formation. The framework is structural, phenomenological, and interpretive. It does not claim direct access to unconscious neural mechanisms or propose that every feeling contains valid hidden knowledge.
