Evaluates health risks and nutritional value in commercial honeysuckle, suggesting low risks and high quality.
Lonicera japonica , a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is widely used in healthcare and therapeutic applications. To evaluate the health risks and nutritional value associated with heavy metals and trace elements in commercial honeysuckle, the distribution of Cd, Pb, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Se in samples obtained from Xingtai city were analysed by considering honeysuckle production area, packaging and price. The results indicated a 5% Cd exceedance rate. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values for Pb, Cd, As and Cu were <1, suggesting a low non-carcinogenic risk. Cd and As pose potential carcinogenic risks but within acceptable limits. Risks of Cd and As are higher for children than for adults. Ultimately, honeysuckle from Henan, which comes boxed and is priced as 0.51–0.80 yuan/g, may be considered a relatively preferable choice owing to its lower health risks and higher nutritional quality. These results provide a scientific basis for the food safety control of honeysuckle and the protection of consumers' health.
