Identifies critical competencies for bridge construction inspectors, suggesting areas for improved training programs.
Construction inspectors play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of bridges throughout the construction process. However, there are limited studies examining the competencies of bridge construction inspectors (BCIs). Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze core competencies (CCs) and technical competencies (TCs) related to bridge construction inspection. A thorough literature review of documents related to bridge construction inspection was conducted to identify an initial list of construction competencies for BCIs. Then, a short list of BCI competencies was distributed to 50 state highway agencies in the US. The Mann–Whitney U test was employed to analyze CCs and TCs regarding how experience levels influence competency prioritization in bridge construction inspection. Furthermore, a principal component analysis was employed to identify and categorize key competencies into underlying dimensions, thereby simplifying complex data into distinct competency categories. The study shows that four CCs are recognized as essential soft skills for BCIs, including attention to detail, dependability and reliability, critical and analytic thinking, and written and oral communication skills. The most critical TCs for BCIs are understanding DOT regulations, policies, and procedures; the ability to comprehend construction plans, specifications, and contract provisions; knowledge of materials and construction means and methods; and experience in inspecting, testing materials, and documenting work. The findings offer practical value to highway agencies by identifying key areas of knowledge and skills that can inform the development of standardized training programs and future educational efforts aimed at preparing the next generation of qualified BCIs.
