Rare pericardial leiomyosarcoma causes fatal cardiac tamponade during anesthetic recovery in a mule mare.
Case Report (n=1)
This case report describes a rare instance of acute death in a mule due to cardiac tamponade from a pericardial leiomyosarcoma during anaesthetic recovery.
Identifies rare pericardial leiomyosarcoma as cause of post-anesthetic death in a mule; leaves open whether pre-anesthetic cardiac screening is warranted in geriatric equines.
Summary This case report is of educational value and contributes to the literature because it describes a unique death after anaesthesia due to cardiac tamponade from a rare cardiac neoplasm. In trying to diagnose the origin of chronic sinusitis, a geriatric mule mare was anaesthetised and during recovery, died acutely. Post‐mortem and histopathology revealed the cause of death as cardiac tamponade due to a pericardial leiomyosarcoma.

Carroll et al. (2026) conducted a case report in Cardiac tamponade secondary to pericardial leiomyosarcoma (n=1). Anaesthesia was evaluated on Death. A 21-year-old mule mare experienced acute death during anaesthetic recovery due to cardiac tamponade caused by a rare pericardial leiomyosarcoma.
