Demonstrates effective Giese reaction catalysis using red light in organic synthesis, suggesting innovative applications.
A red-light-driven Giese reaction, catalyzed by [5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10,20-diphenylporphinato]zinc(II) in combination with Hantzsch ester, proceeds via the decarboxylative radical coupling of a redox-active N -acyloxyphthalimide with electron-deficient alkenes and alkynes to furnish the corresponding adducts. The present study also reveals the unique reactivity of 3-aryl-substituted N -acyloxyphthalimides, which can undergo either a radical cascade reaction or a Giese reaction with selectivity controlled by the electronic and steric properties of the radical intermediates.
