Study engages high school students in monitoring water quality, fostering scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.
The Reservoir Observer Student Scientists (ROSS) program is a place-based participatory science initiative that engages high school students in year-round water quality monitoring to detect and better understand cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). By combining hands-on sampling, data analysis, and reflective learning, the program fosters scientific literacy while generating meaningful contributions to environmental research. Since its launch in 2017, ROSS has partnered with multiple high schools across Kansas, Missouri, and Minnesota, and is coordinated by Dr. Rebecca L. North at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
