Urgent action is needed to replace the GONG system to ensure continuous space weather observations and forecasts.
Urgent action is required to replace the aging GONG system that is already beyond its original design lifespan. Loss of GONG without a replacement will result in a critical gap in the essential observations required for the SWPC forecast system. In September 2025, a Request For Proposal (RFP) was released by NASA for a Phase A study of a PHOtospheric Magnetograph Imager (PHOMI) for operation on an upcoming NOAA Space Weather Geostationary (SWGEO) satellite as early as FY31. Based on the anticipated loss of the aging international network of GONG telescopes, the PHOMI sensor on a NOAA satellite is the only timely option available to maintain the essential observations required to operate the SWPC forecast model for geomagnetic storms.
