This article explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an underestimated tool for promoting health and well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Digital Divide and Equity Framework. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the world in ways aligned with SDG 3: ‘Good Health and Well-being’. The study critically examines how disparities in digital access, literacy, and infrastructure influence the opportunities and challenges for AI-driven health interventions in the region. By combining qualitative analyses of current AI applications in healthcare with the digital divide and equity-focused framework, the article highlights the risks of worsening existing inequalities and identifies pathways for inclusive and sustainable health outcomes. The research emphasises the importance of targeted policies and capacity-building initiatives that address structural barriers to AI adoption, ensuring that technological advances lead to equitable health benefits for diverse populations. Ultimately, the paper argues that bridging the AI divide is crucial for harnessing AI’s transformative potential as a tool for sustainable development and better well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa. This can only happen through contextualised implementation, strong governance, and continuous stakeholder engagement. If used correctly, AI can help health systems make significant progress towards achieving the health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.
