SR-B1 acts as the first HDL receptor, mediating selective cholesterol uptake for steroidogenesis.
Cholesterol is carried through the blood by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (“bad” cholesterol) and then into cells by the LDL receptor. In this issue of Science ( p. 518 ), the first receptor for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (“good” cholesterol) is reported to be the cell-surface protein SR-B1. In his Perspective, D. Steinberg discusses this discovery and describes how the selective uptake of cholesterol mediated by SR-BI delivers cholesterol for steroid hormone synthesis to the liver, the adrenal gland, and the ovary.

Daniel Steinberg (1996) reported an editorial. SR-B1 receptor was evaluated. The cell-surface protein SR-B1 has been identified as the first receptor for high-density lipoprotein, mediating the selective uptake of cholesterol for steroid hormone synthesis.
