The number of demented elderly within the Australian population is increasing rapidly. The financial and societal aspects of their care represent a major public health problem. The subjective effects of caregiving, that is burden, have been well described but the physical and mental health effects of caregiving have not been adequately determined except for selected populations. Interventions to improve the well‐being of caregivers have not been comprehensively evaluated. Future research should focus on establishing the efficacy of interventions in either unselected populations or in individuals who have a clearly described selection process.
