Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences, enabling them to lead an active and healthy life. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to assess the status, focal points, and trends in food security research in Nigeria. Utilizing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R-package tools, this study examined 1,227 documents indexed in the Scopus database covering the period from 1981 to 2023. The findings revealed a rapid increase in the number of published articles in this field from 2018 to 2021. South Africa and the USA are the leading international collaborators on food security research in Nigeria. “Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives” and “Osabohien R” emerged as the source and author, respectively, with the highest relevance in food security research in Nigeria. Furthermore, author keywords such as "food supply," "agriculture," "climate change,” “sustainability,” “Covid-19,” "food insecurity," and "poverty" were most commonly used in food security research in Nigeria. Monitoring hotspots and frontiers in food security research is essential for understanding crucial directions for future research endeavours. These results offer valuable insights into the direction of food security research in Nigeria and provide researchers with useful guidance for future exploration of this domain. Overall, this comprehensive review underscores the critical and urgent need for innovative research to enhance the productivity and sustainability of Nigeria’s agrifood system, from field to fork, including the application of biotechnology and other emerging technologies.
