Magnetic abrasive finishing is a non-traditional technique used to finish flat surface, internal and external surfaces of tubes and some of freeform surfaces, etc. The process involves several parameters which are required to be optimised for having control over surface roughness to be achieved. This paper explains the mechanism involved in material removal during magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) and analytical model is developed to calculate surface roughness considering the total effect of number of active abrasives, circumferential speed, feed, magnetic flux density and diameter of magnetic abrasive particles. Theoretical results obtained from the developed analytical model are found to be in agreement with experimental results.
