Demonstrates efficient frequency conversion in nonlocal metasurfaces, suggesting significant advancements for optical devices.
Nanophotonics holds great promise to reduce the footprint of optical frequency conversion devices. Since these typically rely on nondegenerate three-wave mixing, sum frequency generation (SFG) in metasurfaces has recently sparked interest and has been demonstrated in several material platforms. Here we focus on nonlocal metasurfaces of aluminum gallium arsenide with (100) crystalline orientation, because of its great appeal in terms of high χ (2) nonlinearity and mature integrability with other optoelectronic devices. In this zincblende semiconductor, we demonstrate efficient SFG in metasurfaces based on multiple Fano resonances. By exciting the metasurface with two infrared input beams, we up-convert optical frequency in the silicon absorption band with a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.6×10 –7 cm 2 /GW, 2 orders of magnitude higher than in Mie-type resonant metasurfaces.
