This article explores how generative AI enriches multimodal learning, suggesting impactful applications in education.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has recently provided new possibilities for advancing multimodal learning in education. It offers affordances for producing diverse semiotic modes that enhance student learning and engagement. Beyond generating linguistic modes, GenAI can also create nonlinguistic modes—such as visuals, sounds, gestures, and videos—that can be integrated into multimodal content across a range of educational contexts. These affordances enable teachers to design engaging and meaningful tasks that are not only creative but also pedagogically meaningful, making learning experiences more engaging, interactive, and enjoyable. This article explores how educators can leverage GenAI to enrich multimodal learning, with a focus on its potential affordances, practical applications, and the challenges that should be addressed to achieve its effective integration into contemporary classrooms.
