Systematic review explores zero-waste patternmaking strategies in apparel design, highlighting key insights for practitioners.
This study aims to describe the pattern drafting processes and strategies used in zero-waste patternmaking (ZWP) development through a systematic literature review. Thirty-one papers were included in this report. The inclusion criteria were that papers must (1) present original ZWP apparel design, (2) use the ZWP method to achieve zero-waste fashion, (3) address the ZWP development process, (4) be published in English, and (5) be peer-reviewed. The findings identified communication styles and design obstacles in ZWP development. Additionally, the study identified the main themes related to ZWP development procedures. ZWP designers used the iterative consideration of two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional forms and applied fitting techniques to close the gap between the human body and clothing. They specified the importance of fabric consideration and continuous evaluation throughout the process. The study provides practical insights for designers and industry practitioners to better comprehend ZWP practice and support ZWP development in the industry.
