Letter identifies barriers and recommends improvements for neurodivergent clients in substance use services.
Substance use services are systematically misaligned with the needs of neurodivergent clients, producing elevated rates of disengagement, premature discharge, and treatment-related harm. This paper identifies those barriers across clinical protocol, therapeutic communication, and engagement strategies. Evidence-based recommendations address camouflaging, trauma-informed care, person-centered goal setting, and organizational adaptations, with the goal of designing substance use treatment that benefits all clients.
