Evaluates the performance of a novel nitrate-ester oxidizer derived from FOX-7, indicating potential advancements in propellant safety and effectiveness.
An oxidizer that simultaneously satisfies the requirements of high energy, safety, and synthetic accessibility remains a major challenge in energetic materials research, particularly when compared with conventional ammonium perchlorate (AP) and emerging alternatives such as ammonium dinitramide (ADN) and hydrazinium nitroformate (HNF). Herein, we report a nitrate‐ester‐based energetic oxidizer derived from FOX‐7 through a controlled nitration strategy, circumventing the synthetic complexity and handling challenges commonly associated with ADN‐type oxidizers. The resulting compound exhibits high thermal stability (189°C), high density (1.69 g cm −3 ), a good oxygen balance (OB CO : +21.6% and OB CO2 : 0%), and promising detonation performance (VOD: 8157 m s −1 ; DP: 26.97 GPa), while maintaining low sensitivity to external stimuli. In addition to eliminating the chlorine‐induced environmental and corrosive effects inherent to AP‐based formulations, this work establishes FOX‐7 as a versatile and practical molecular platform for the development of next‐generation, environmentally benign energetic oxidizers for advanced propellants.
