Flash tip illustrates the use of drawing to explore emotional narratives in ethnographic writing with Iranian women.
In this flash tip on writing, I suggest drawing and sketching as techniques that allow ethnographers to work through emotionally charged stories when words alone fall short. I share a vignette from my ethnographic research with Iranian newcomer women in Canada, who are living an exilic life and carrying embodied memories of protests both here (in Canada) and there (in Tehran). Through this vignette, I illustrate how pause ‐made possible through drawing‐ can become a catalyst for writing.
