Demonstrates soft power's role in increasing donations during the Ukraine conflict, suggesting a new function in foreign relations.
Soft power is traditionally viewed as a long-term foreign policy tool to strengthen connections with other states, however, using soft power to gain donations has not been studied. Using the case of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this article studies soft power’s new function as a tool to gain immediate monetary support in the form of philanthropic donations recorded by Candid during conflict. Using a new dataset from Trunkos to measure soft power actions, the results of a multiple linear regression model show that soft power use positively impacts philanthropic donations, especially boosted by significant events.
