This paper investigates defect modulation in vanadium-doped CeO2 nanoparticles, which are synthesized using the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement confirm lattice distortion, micro-strain, and an increase in oxygen vacancies, preserving the fluorite structure. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy reveals an increase in open-volume defects linked to cluster vacancies. UV–Vis spectroscopy reveals a reduction in the band gap from 3.2 to 2.3 eV, attributed to the presence of intermediate defect states. These modifications may favor charge transfer processes that are potentially relevant to catalytic and photocatalytic applications. The structural and electronic modifications observed in V-doped CeO2 may facilitate processes relevant to environmental and energy-related applications.
