Thematic analysis reveals insights into reader behavior on BookTok, suggesting improvements for library services.
BookTok, a phenomenon on TikTok, showcases users sharing and engaging with popular books. This study analyzed the top 50 comments on five #BookTok videos using thematic analysis framed by Bates’ Berrypicking Model. Findings indicate that users primarily share general book information, express emotional attachment, and encourage peer interaction. These behaviors reveal insights into reader motivation, emotional engagement, and community-building. Public librarians can leverage these patterns to inform collection development, reader’s advisory, and programming. By understanding BookTok dynamics, libraries can enhance engagement, promote collections, and create inclusive spaces that reflect the social and emotional drivers of reading communities.
