Consciousness is the subjective experience of existing, yet it remains one of the hardest phenomena to explain scientifically. This paper presents the Gateway Equation as a formal relational model designed to map how the magnitude and character of subjective experience vary across distinct biological substrates, cognitive states, and evolutionary cohorts. The framework formalizes these dynamics by modeling the interaction of three distinct operational variables: substrate gating capacity, Sigma (σ); integrated content, Phi (Φ); and recursive focus, Zeta (ζ). Rather than functioning as independent, additive traits, these variables are modeled as interdependent factors where substrate thresholds bound the global field, content dictates qualitative richness, and recursive mechanisms nonlinearly scale experiential clarity. We demonstrate the utility of this framework by mapping its theoretical predictions against established empirical proxies derived from clinical anesthesia, resting-state fMRI connectivity, elite meditative states, and pathological dissociations. The primary contribution of this work is the formal architecture itself: a systematically unified model that bridges disparate neural correlates into a single, testable mathematical syntax.
