Abstract This commentary underscores the common themes that emerged in the papers in this volume. Based on the themes, three specific areas of future directions are highlighted: (a) going beyond practicality arguments when using digital assessment tools, (b) developing rubric descriptors specific to interactional competence in digital spaces, and (c) promoting intersubjectivity with artificial intelligence (AI)‐powered conversation partners in interactional competence assessment tasks.
