This article introduces power spectral density analysis in brain diagnostics, highlighting its significance for statistical modeling.
Time series from M/EEG (magneto/electroencephalography) and ECoG (electrocorticography) recordings are common sources of information about brain function. The power spectral density (PSD) preserves much of this information, up to second order. In the current decade, a burst of brain diagnostics using the slope of log(PSD) has appeared. This article aims to introduce this important active field to statisticians and probabilists from the viewpoint of stochastic dynamics. It also explores some principles that may underlie the ‐like nature of the PSD from such time series.
