Examines crystalline quantum matter's structure and excitations, suggesting novel framework implications.
We formulate a universal variational framework for crystalline quantum matter based on the deficit functional on the space of bond states. For an arbitrary given lattice graph \(G\) with a local Hilbert space assignment, the ground state is identified as the global minimiser of the total deficit functional under vertex compatibility constraints. The minimiser is unique up to global symmetry, and its structure is classified by the coordination number \(z\) of \(G\). Low-energy excitations are obtained from the Hessian of the deficit functional at the minimiser; their spectrum and symmetry quantum numbers are determined by the representation theory of the lattice symmetry group. Topological defects correspond to saturated deficit regions, and their boundary physics is governed by the bulk-boundary correspondence of the effective Chern--Simons theory. The framework provides a single mathematical route from lattice geometry to ground-state phase diagrams, excitation spectra, and topological order, with all approximations and external inputs explicitly identified.
