Comparative analysis of sustainability rankings reveals challenges and potential for universities to improve practices.
Universities have been using ranking systems to measure their sustainability performance for decades. Recently, several new ranking methods have surfaced, and it seems the competition has confused users more rather than helped the overall system improve. Comparing the two dominant systems used by universities to assess campus sustainability performance revealed the pros and cons of each, together with their suitability in truly measuring the extent to which sustainable practices affect universities. We also considered the role of campus planners and how they can help the decision processes that lead universities to choose the means to measure their sustainability performance.
